But she wont help me.... this was one of the most ironic things that could have happened today. I was observing the class and all of the sudden another student from one of the other classes comes in. It happens to be the student who I am doing my case study on and so I was very interested in talking to him because I hadnt in a while and also because I was curious to know what he had done to get himself sent to this class when he was supposed to be in math. The team has a system where if a child is not behaving or having problems in one class then they are sent to another teacher for a certain amount of time to cool off and then rejoin the original class. Well I come to find out that he was in math class and they were doing a lesson that he was unfamiliar with and was confused with what was going on and was unable to follow. He shared with the teacher that he was confused and lost and had honestly no idea what was going on and was looking for some extra help to learn what was going on. However, the teacher responded with this is how I am going to teach you guys because I have been doing it this ways for many many years and I am not going to change just because you dont understand. Well, according to this young man, they continued to talk about it until she got fed up and sent him to the english room for some time out and away from math. I thought this was really interesting especially after just getting done doing my lit circle and how we discussed how a certain teacher at this young childs school was unwilling to work with the students as indivduals and change her methods of teaching to accomodate for the changes in time over the years. It really made me think about how important it is to realize that not every style is going to work for everyone and there may come a time when a change here and there will be needed. I was in shock when he said this to me because all of the philosophies from my book are still very fresh in my head and I immediately thought about the teacher in the book and how much of an impact she made in the life of one student just by how she treated him one time. This made me feel very concerned for this student and the fact that he will never think of this teacher in the same way and will probably remember for a long time how she was not willing to work with him and try another way of trying to teach it. Now I do realize that this is coming from this young boys perspective and we dont have the other side from the teacher. However I found it interesting how I th0ught that teachers wouldnt act in the ways we found in the book, but it appears that it may be in areas that we are familiar with and not even realizing it. Its amazing how this child shared this with me and the first thing I thought of was my book and the story of the teacher and child from it. I guess class and things that are happening in your life really are more interlinked than one may think......
