Yesterday at obseving was the most eye opening experience yet. The class had something called a workshop day which is where they are given a good amount of time in the class to work on their paper which they were forming a rough draft form. This gave them an oppurtunity to ask questions and get a start on their work. I was able to work with a variety of students and help them with their papers and encourage them to think about what they wanted to write about. There was one student in particular where the teacher and the student had come to an end on helping each other because they were not relating well to each other and were not able to be productive due to this miscommunication. Seeing that there was potential in the story, I went and worked with the student for a while to try and help him to at least get started. I was able to get him to talk to me and tell me why he was stuggling with the assignment and talk with him about what we could do to fix the situation. He was not understanding the assignment and was confused with what the teacher was telling him to do in the time he was given. I had him tell me the story that he was going to be writing about and was able to help him to start the paper and get some sentences going to begin the paper. All he needed was someone to sit and talk with him and explain to him in terms he could understand what was needed from him. This really showed me that he does want to try and do well its just that he is a student that needs just a little more help and some ideas to bounce off of some one. I know that this experience will stick with me for a while and that I can come back to it and remember on those hard days that everyone has the potential it just sometimes takes an extra step to get them to the same point as everyone else.
